Introduction

The composition of the atmosphere is discussed in sec. 3.3. Air is invariably impure and is always contaminated with gases like CO, N02, SO2 etc. (which are poisonous in nature) and finely divided solid and liquid particles and smog. Air becomes polluted due to the presence of the above contaminants. The presence of these contaminants in the air is called air pollution and the materials which pollute the air are called air pollutants. In fact, pollution of air (or atmosphere) is an unwanted change in the quality of the air caused by emission of gases due to the burning of fossil fuels, volcanic eruptions and discharge of particulate matter into the atmosphere by industrial activities and soil erosion.
