Introduction
So far, many aspects of the environment, its pollution, protection and conservation have been elaborated in detail. There are so many factors affecting the environment that controlling all of them completely is not feasible because many secrets of the nature are yet to be unraveled.
However, some of them can be taken care of so that we can save the environment from their harmful effects. The role of human beings is very important in the conservation of the environment. By wisdom, careful planning and proper management, we can save the environment from various threats and negative consequences. We realize the importance of these aspects only when their neglect leads to disasters. In this chapter, some case studies illustrate the above points. Bhopal gas tragedy is one such black spot which can not be erased from the history of India. Besides accidents, the rapid urbanization and the unplanned development can also lead to degradation of the environment. This is clearly evident in case of pollution scenario in the city of Delhi. The two main culprits affecting the environment and the health of residents of Delhi are vehicular and industrial pollution. Various efforts are being made to control the pollution in Delhi. The results have started showing up and in the due course of time, the pollution is expected to be under control. However, there is a long way to go before the situation is brought back to the state which used to be a few decades earlier.
