Most observed patterns of population growth can be grouped into four major types: exponential growth, logistic growth, population fluctuations, and regular population cycles (a special type of fluctuation). Bear in mind, however, that a single population could (and probably will) experience each of these four types of growth at different times. For example, as we will see shortly, a population may grow logistically yet fluctuate around the values expected in logistic growth.
