CONCLUSIONS
Studies attempting to correlate apoptosis with clinical parameters, such as rate of disease progression or response to therapy, have produced a variety of results. In part, differences can be reconciled by the variety of methods by which apoptosis was induced or measured and by the various criteria used to define groups of differing rates of clinical progression or the variety of antiretroviral agents used.
Although a number of studies illustrate no association between specific clinical parameters and apoptosis, arguing for the existence of other contributory factors in the pathogenesis of CD4 T lymphocyte decline during HIV infection, a large number of studies now support a contributory role for apoptosis in clinical outcomes in HIV infection. These, however, are largely associations. The challenge for researchers now is to identify specific models with which to address causality.ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
