Zoonoses

A zoonosis is a disease which can be passed from animals to man - and of course from man back to animals. Many have already been mentioned in previous chapters, and the following is a list of the more important ones in cattle.

Anthrax

Brucellosis

BSE

Crytosporidia

Leptospirosis (L. hardjo)

Listeriosis

Pseudocowpox

Q fever

Ringworm

Salmonella, especially S. typhimurium

Tuberculosis

Readers should note that although BSE is now included in this list, there remains considerable dispute as to whether infection can in fact pass from cattle to man.

In the UK, the Zoonosis Order, 1975, requires that certain zoonotic diseases must be reported to the Ministry of Agriculture. At present this includes only salmonellosis.
