Muslim Personal Law (MPL) is one of the most controversial issues of our public life. It is often presented to us as an antithesis of the core essential Indian values and practices: its legality is described as a serious challenge to the secular sprit of the Indian Constitution, while its existence as a religious code of conduct for Muslims is seen as a symbol of political separatism. We are told that MPL is a fundamental source of Muslim communalism, backwardness and patriarchal dominance. The Supreme Court judgement on the issue of triple talaq and the enactment of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 are seen as a way out to achieve a truly secular and essentially Indian version of an equally enigmatic entity called the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
