Conclusion
In his ethical book Adab al-dunya wa al-din, al-Mawardi discusses a concept of ‘comprehensive Justice’ that seems to me to be innovative. He does not focus on the concept as a metaphysical characteristic (holy justice), which is the subject of theological differences (e.
g. between the Mu'tazila and the Ash'ariyya). He also does not regard the term as an human virtue, which is the focus of the questions related to the law. Rather, he views justice as a profane question and as a socially relevant concept, which is decisive for the regulation of social conditions and thus for the functioning of a social system. It is also striking that he argues for the justifying of the necessity of just behavior in an experience-oriented and pragmatic manner. His basic argument in this context is that a just behavior is indispensable for the functioning of the community and therefore advantageous for all members of the community.
