The study
THE field study was divided into two parts, the first related to the perception of marriage as a social process, involving not only the husband and wife but also other parties; and the second, building on the first, concerned with attitudes to the personal status law governing this social process.
For the first part, certain straightforward and specific questions were put to the respondents, as follows:1. What is the appropriate age for males and females to establish an independent and stable family unit?
2. What rights do women have in choosing their partners, and what criteria inform this choice?
3. What is the purpose of the financial elements, notably the dower (or dowry) and jewellery (shabkd)f1 in so far as they may be factors affecting the success or failure of the marriage?
4. Wliat is the sample’s position on polygyny?
5. How are the roles and responsibilities of family members distributed?
6. What are the most common reasons for divorce and family breakdown?
