Diagnosis and staging of cancer during pregnancy

Many symptoms associated with malignancy might also be experienced during normal pregnancy. These include nausea and vomiting, bowel discomfort and pain, anaemia, chronic tiredness, and lethargy.

Patients often hesitate to contact their caregiver when they discover a worrying symptom for fear of bad news, especially during a pregnancy because of their concern that the diagnosis and treatment of the disease will jeopardize the health of their baby. Physicians also fail to focus on other health aspects in the presence of a pregnancy. This leads to a delayed diagnosis.

Histological specimens should be interpreted with caution during pregnancy and the pathologist should be informed about the pregnant state. The interpretation of tissue biopsies may be difficult in the presence of pregnancy hormones which may cause significant changes in normal and pathological tissues.
