Introduction
Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) remains an enigma to the gynaecologists. Up to now, there is no universally agreed definition. According to the latest International Society of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynaecology European Consensus Statement in 2015, CPP is defined as:
a persistent, severe and distressing pain lasting at least 6 months. It may occur cyclically, intermittently/situationally or chronically. It leads to a major reduction in quality of life. In some patients, physical change/disorders can be regarded as the main cause; while in others, the pain seems to be mainly associated with emotional conflict and psychosocial stress. Both conditions can occur simultaneously. (1)
It is important to remember that it is a symptom, and not in itself a diagnosis (2).
