Knowledge Gaps
There are still many questions left unanswered with regards to paratuberculosis and its control or eradication (Barkema et al., 2018). With such an endemic disease and decades of attempted control programmes, is eradication a reasonable goal? There remains a need for more accurate diagnostic tests, especially to detect early stages of infection.
Performance of current diagnostic tests hinders accurate estimates in regional and global prevalence. A better understanding of the significance of the global prevalence of paratuberculosis is required to better estimate economic losses. Further research is also required in development of control programmes with good economic returns. What role can vaccines play in the control of paratuberculosis? How much risk does wildlife have in MAP transmission to livestock? More answers are needed as to the role of genetics: the importance of genetic susceptibility and genotypes involved in the two observed shedding patterns. Further, more complete understanding of psychosocial determinates of producer behaviour and producer participation in control programmes must be acquired.References
