Host and Pathogen Characteristics That Define Ovine Paratuberculosis

12.2.1 Breed, age and sex of sheep

An experimental infection study using Merino, Suffolk-Merino cross, Border Leicester and Poll Dorset breeds has shown genetic differences in susceptibility to MAP when controlling for the MAP strain, dose of infection and age at inoculation (Begg et al., 2017).

Merino and SuffolkMerino cross animals were more susceptible to disease. An on-farm study of various breeds of sheep with natural MAP infection had similar findings: Dorset animals were less susceptible than the other breeds present (Hemalatha et al., 2013). Both on-farm and experimental studies have shown that all ages of sheep can become infected with MAP, although animals infected at a younger age are more likely to have more faecal shedding and more severe lesions (McGregor et al., 2012; Delgado et al., 2013). Hemalatha et al. (2013) indicated that females were more susceptible to MAP, but as the numbers of animals for each sex was not provided and the two groups were housed separately, further research is required to confirm this finding.
