Degenerative Changes in the Nervous System

Age-related abnormalities seen in aged rats include Wal- lerian degeneration in focal areas of the spinal cord and segmental demyelination of the peripheral nervous system, particularly in the sciatic nerves. Wallerian degeneration in the spinal cord is characterized by the presence of enlarged axons containing eosinophilic material (spheroids). In the brain and spinal cord, there may be degeneration of scattered neurons, with astrogliosis. Lipochrome pigment may be present in some neurons in the brain and spinal cord.
