Periodontal Disease

Hamsters have served as experimental models of both periodontal disease and caries, which are induced by a combination of dietary and microbial factors. Spontane­ous periodontal disease does occur, but is apparently rare. Hamster parvovirus (MPV-3) infection may cause abnormalities in tooth growth.
