Why study disease? It’s not a very pleasant subject to contemplate. The pages of its history are full of suffering and death. Truly, an epidemic tempers a society, subjecting it to trials either to which it must succumb or over which it must triumph. There is no middle ground with plague. It is the litmus test of civilizations.
