Cardiovascular Manifestations in Children
Cardiac manifestations and complications of HIV infection in children are common. They include cardiac dysfunction, arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, myocarditis, pericardial disease, cardiac tumors, aortic root dilatation, and cerebral aneurysmal arteri- opathy [57-59].
Serious cardiac events and cardiac death are common among children with AIDS, since 28% experience serious cardiac events after AIDS is diagnosed [60]. Pericardial effusion in children is commonly associated with pleural fluid and ascites [57]. CMR has great imaging diagnostic capabilities for most of these diseases without radiation and exposure to iodinated contrast. It may be performed in children with no hazard, but it requires patient cooperation for breath-holds and limitation of motion artefacts. In younger children and infants, when cooperation is poor and when CMR is required for diagnosis, particular anaesthetic procedures are mandatory in order to obtain sufficient image quality for diagnosis.
