The idea of this volume was first conceived on the sidelines of the conference on the imperial identities in Ukraine during the “long” eighteenth century held at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv in September 2017. The goal was to make available to the wider scholarly community the innovative research being conducted in Ukraine on a period and topics that had received relatively little attention. It took more than five years and the efforts of many people and institutions to bring it to fruition.
