Papillomavirus Infections

Treatment of the lingual mucosa of Syrian hamsters with the carcinogen 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene (DMBA) and excisional wounding has been shown to result in development of dysplastic and neoplastic mucosal lesions in which papillomavirus antigen, viral particles, intranuclear and cytoplasmic inclusions, and koilocytosis were observed.

Papillomavirus DNA was detected, fully sequenced, and named MsPV1. Using L1 gene sequence primers, specific DNA could be detected in normal, untreated mucosa. The source of the hamsters was not reported, and it is unknown how prevalent this virus is among Syrian hamsters in general. Another papillomavirus (PsPV1) has been amplified and fully sequenced from an anogenital lesion of a Siberian hamster. The nature of the lesion was not described and the prevalence of this virus among Siberian hamsters is unknown.
