Quality of Bedding
Dusty bedding material can result in aspiration pneumonia (Fig. 2.74). This is often the aftermath of rough handling of shipping boxes. Blepharitis has been seen in nude rats housed on hardwood type bedding. High mortality has been observed in Sprague-Dawley rats housed on aromatic cedar wood shavings. Reduced weight gains were also observed. The mechanism(s) of the disease was not determined.
